What We Do

Altarum is a nonprofit organization that works with federal and state health agencies and foundations to improve health outcomes of Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. We achieve measurable results by combining our expertise in public health and health care delivery with technology, workforce training and continuing education, applied research, and technical assistance. Our innovative solutions lead to better value for payers and better health for individuals with fewer financial resources and populations disenfranchised by the health care system.

We are creators and doers—we don't stop at describing problems. Our solutions are holistic, enabled by technology, and intently focused on prevention and appropriate care. Solving tough problems for the greater good is what drives us, along with a belief that a future of better health for all is within reach. From lower-income children to nursing home-eligible older adults, our mission is to help those whose health is negatively impacted by social determinants.

  1. Altarum’s roots date back to 1946 with the founding of an applied science research institute by University of Michigan engineering professors. We work closely with defense and intelligence agencies on satellite and signal processing technology, including the groundbreaking discovery of how to apply the theory of holography.

  2. We enter the health sector, analyzing national nursing policies for the National Institutes of Health. We develop for the Department of Defense the Managed Care Forecasting and Analysis System, a method for forecasting beneficiary populations and their associated demand for health care services at military hospitals and clinics.

  3. Altarum expands further into the health sector, developing for the state of Michigan a childhood immunization registry and one of the nation’s most advanced disease-tracking systems. We conduct advanced analysis for health agencies within the Department of Defense, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

  4. Altarum’s work with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, states, and foundations grows. We help 39 states build a network of integrated substance use disorder treatment and recovery services. We expand our technical expertise into the clinical research, health communications, and value-based payment domains.

  5. Altarum develops and deploys proprietary technology to improve access to oral health care for nearly 1 million children. We evolve our health IT adoption program into a model for managing chronic conditions for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Our analytical models advance medical quality and health equity. We refine our mission to focus on vulnerable and publicly insured populations.
