The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Roundtable is an invitation-only discussion forum focused on identifying priority areas and opportunities to increase the integration of the public health and health care delivery systems to advance equtiy and improve MCH outcomes.
Ensuring access to high-quality, equitable care for women, birthing people, and children remains a top priority for federal, state, and private-sector leaders. However, evidence shows that Black and American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) women are disproportionately impacted by poor maternal health outcomes. Black women experience preterm birth rates that are 49% higher than for all women, and AIAN women are 3-4 times more likely to die from childbirth than White women. Mother and child health are interconnected and risks and disparities are intergenerational. Disparities are exacerbated by access, quality, and equity issues in a public health and health care delivery system that has struggled to align in ways that achieve optimal population health and improved health outcomes.
The nation’s ongoing maternal and child health crisis demonstrates the need for coordination between public health, health care delivery, and the human services sectors to support women and children’s access to the appropriate care when they need it. Altarum recently published an article in Health Affairs highlighting areas of opportunity for enhanced collaboration and integration between the Title V MCH Block Grant and Medicaid that could result in breakthrough levels of improvement.
The roundtable will bring together key federal leaders, state officials, and leading stakeholders to develop operational recommendations for application across sectors, while elucidating stakeholder challenges and opportunities relative to those approaches. Specific discussion topics will include:
The MCH Roundtable will serve as a catalyst to develop actionable strategies to improve MCH outcomes by exploring public health and health care integration and the intersectionality of social and structural drivers of health inequity at the individual and community level.

The invitation-only event will take place in the First Amendment Lounge at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on Tuesday, October 18th (postponed—final date to be determined).
