Nearly 10 percent of the population suffers from a mood disorder, such as depression or bipolar disorder, and many do not receive care. Altarum, in partnership with the National Network of Depression Centers, created a web-based learning health system that offers participating sites a standardized process to collect patient reported outcomes in a clinical setting to improve outcomes for those suffering from depression or bipolar disorder.

Our important work with the National Network of Depression Centers was recently published in Psychiatric Services, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Psychiatric Association. The article, “Development of the National Network of Depression Centers Mood Outcomes Program: A Multisite Platform for Measurement-Based Care,” uses data from the system to take an initial snapshot of the clinical burden of mood disorders, and makes the case for a further expanded, nationwide learning health system to monitor and assess mood disorders.
