Disparities in Postpartum Depression Prevalence affect Women Participating in WIC

Postpartum depression is estimated to occur among 10–20% of new mothers and has long been known to differentially affect low-income women.

A study recently published by Altarum in the Maternal and Child Health Journal, confirms these findings and further indicates that women participating in WIC are more than 65% more likely to experience postpartum depressive symptoms in the months after childbirth compared to higher-income mothers.
