Opportunities To Enhance American Indian Access To The WIC Food Package

Report | March 12, 2014

With support from the Aetna Foundation, Altarum recently completed a study to:

  • Examine the ability of American Indians living on tribal lands in Arizona to buy fruits, vegetables, and other nutrient-dense foods that are prescribed by the federal government’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC); and
  • Identify opportunities to enhance American Indian participants’ access to and acceptance of the recently added WIC foods.

Altarum partnered with the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc. (ITCA) WIC program to conduct this community-based participatory study. This report details findings from three case studies of ITCA local agencies.
