Altarum Commentary on CMS Health Spending Projections Published on Health Affairs Forefront

March 28, 2022

Altarum Fellow George Miller, Program Director Ani Turner, and Senior Analyst Corey Rhyan, along with Katherine Hempstead of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, recently published a commentary in Health Affairs Forefront.

The article reviews the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) recent update to their national health expenditure projections, which project health spending from 2021 through 2030. The new CMS projections provided the authors with an opportunity to revisit and refine their December 2020 speculation that pandemic-associated changes in utilization would persist and result in lower growth in health care expenditures. They argue that the new projections reveal that the longest-lasting impacts of the pandemic may be an acceleration of shifts that were already underway, including slower projected growth in institutional care settings such as hospitals and nursing homes.
